Barbara Ryan

Qualified and Registered Primary School Teacher

I am an experienced fully certificated and registered primary school teacher new to the Omokoroa area, having worked in pre-school and primary school settings in Wellington since 1974. I moved here with my husband, Mark, from Eastbourne in Wellington in 2018.  We have two daughters, Rachel, with a young toddler, and Jennifer, with a baby girl. Rachel and her family have just moved to Omokoroa to be closer to us. I enjoy spending time with family and walking by the sea.

While my girls were young I trained and worked as a Playcentre supervisor and retain a keen interest in transition from pre-school to school.

My philosophy

I love working with young children and through my passion for science and sustainability can enhance experiences and opportunities to build self-confidence, self-esteem and foster independent thinking through child-led scientific discovery and investigation. I have a keen interest in encouraging children to explore and extend their curiosity in their play, which promotes the development of valuable problem-solving skills. I know how to engage children in learning that is meaningful to them.

I believe that curiosity, investigation, perseverance, and problem solving are all very important learning dispositions for our children as they work on generating more complex working theories about the world around them.

I have energy, enthusiasm, excellent communication skills and a desire to achieve the best social, emotional and educational outcomes for the tamariki at Minnows Kindergarten and their whanau.
